The Minister of Justice of Senegal, Ousmane Diagne, announced that the government will do everything possible to shed light on the deaths of people who died during the protests that took place between 2021 and 2024.

The protests that took place in Senegal from 2021 to 2024 were against the decision of Macky Sall who wanted to lead a third term but the Constitution did not accept it.

The dissidents led by Ousmane Sonko began to block the streets, resulting in the death of some, and the imprisonment of hundreds of others.

In March 2024, the Parliament of Senegal passed a law granting a general amnesty to those involved in the protests, allowing Ousmane Sonko, Bassirou Diomaye Faye and more than 1,000 other dissidents to leave prison.

The Minister of Justice of Senegal, Ousmane Diagne, explained to the Deputies that the pardon given by President Macky Sall is questionable and that everything will be done to find out the truth.

He said, “The fact that these killings [of 2021-2024] would go on without punishment would be a very bad sign, it would create insecurity. We will work so that the truth will come out.”

He assured that “the actions and the perpetrators will be exposed and the supporters will be held accountable.”

Jeune Afrique writes that the new Parliament of Senegal consists of 130 MPs from the ruling PASTEF party while only 30 from other political parties.

President Diomaye Faye was elected at the end of March 2024, a few days after his release from prison, and immediately appointed the imprisoned Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko.

The Parliament of Senegal has been told that the perpetrators of the murders under Macky Sall’s regime should be held accountable and that the truth behind it should be revealed in order to stop the rumors and bad spirit that could exist if these crimes go unpunished.
