Rwanda: This year there were more than 9,000 accidents that killed more than 350 people. From January to December 2024, there were more than 9,000 road accidents in Rwanda, including 350 deaths.

This is at a time when measures to address this issue are being taken by international human rights organizations and governments around the world, in order to address the consequences of the disaster, as announced by the Rwandan Police.

Five years ago, the Rwanda National Police launched the ‘Gerayo Amahoro’ campaign, which aims to sensitize every road user to change their mindset, take measures to contribute to their own safety and that of others on the road, and avoid all behaviors that can lead to accidents and their consequences, including death and injury, which can lead to permanent disability.

Since the campaign began, according to statistics from the Traffic Safety Unit (TRS), there has been a noticeable change in the number of accidents that occur each year, both in terms of fatalities and injuries; for example, this year compared to the previous year of 2023, overall accidents have decreased by 10%.

The number of fatalities has decreased by 50%, while cyclists, who are often the victims of road accidents, have seen their number of accidents decrease by 17%, reflecting a significant change in road user behavior.

In an interview with some of those with disabilities resulting from road accidents who participate in various sports, including football, which helps them cope with grief, they advised road users, especially during the holiday season, to avoid being overly excited, which could lead to accidents.

Road accidents are a global concern because they are among the leading causes of death in the world, killing more than a million people and injuring others every year.

Peaple are advised by traffic police to be carefully in the streets inorder to avoid accident.
