State television in Moscow reported that Putin apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in a telephone conversation.
Putin called it a “grave disaster” and acknowledged that Russian military aviation forces were involved in operations against Ukrainian drones that were planning to launch attacks in Chechnya.
Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 was reportedly shot down by a Russian air defense missile as it was about to land at Grozny Airport from Baku, Azerbaijan.
According to The Sun, the pilots tried their best to keep the plane in the air, reaching the Caspian Sea but crash-landing near Aktau International Airport in Kazakhstan.
