The Rwandan national team, “Amavubi,” has been eliminated, reducing the number of teams still eligible to play in the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Why was Rwanda eliminated before even playing a playoff game?
In the East African region, “CECAFA” in this CHAN, they are allowed to field only four teams, three of which have received tickets to host this tournament, namely Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, meaning that there is only one ticket to compete for.
After the first qualifying round, five teams remain in contention for a single ticket, namely Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan, although this does not prevent the teams that will host the tournament from also playing in the qualifiers.
In the second qualifying round, all the teams that have played and those that will play will be ranked according to the team with the best statistics.
So far, Sudan has won two of its group matches against Ethiopia [first leg Ethiopia 0-2 Sudan, second leg Sudan 2-1 Ethiopia].
This puts an end to the Lions’ journey because even if they win the South Sudan game, they will not gain 6 points, meaning that currently the teams not in the competition are Ethiopia and Rwanda.
The teams that still have a chance are Sudan’s Khartoum team, South Sudan, who need to beat Amavubi four to nothing (4-0) to advance, and Uganda, who have managed to get at least one point, still have a chance if they win two games against Uganda and have a four-goal lead over Uganda, which is very difficult.
This means that based on the requirements of these teams [Burundi and South Sudan] of winning six points out of six and keeping four goals, it seems that the Sudanese team (Khartoum) has already secured a ticket to the 2025 CHAN to be held in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya.
