The former British Ambassador to the United States of America between 2016 and 2019 when Trump was in power, Kim Darroch, expressed what his colleague named Peter Mandelson, who was put in that position, should take care of, saying that Trump’s constant shouts like in the bar.
In an interview with Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Darroch said that when you’re under attack, especially politically, it’s not good to take it too far.
He was echoing the harsh words one of Trump’s advisers made during the campaign about Mandelson, in which he called him a shadow.
Amb Dorroch said: “That’s what life is going to be like under Trump. It’s always like a bar where there’s always a fight and the noise is really high. You have to be patient with it, but you have to deal with it.”
Among the three things Amb Dorroch told Mandelson to take care of is not to make the mistake of living in Washington because “90% of the people there are Democrats.”, because it is the part that did not vote for Trump.
Another thing Amb Dorroch told Mandelson was to focus on befriending the wealthy in America because Trump is more sympathetic to the wealthy than he is to government officials.
He said that they help him by persuading Trump about certain topics he wants to talk about and hearing what he thinks about him.
The third piece of advice the Briton gave to his colleague who is going to represent the UK in Washington is to prepare for Trump’s social media, especially because the 78-year-old likes to put the X in the joke.
“I can’t tell you how many times I got up at eleven in the morning when I was in Washington. Trump wakes up early and posts a lot of messages on X, talking about what’s going on in the world and Britain included. It’s based on his unfiltered emotions.”
Dorroch told Mandelson that the message could cause problems for Britain, and advised him to stand up for what Britain believes.
