The Embassy of Rwanda in the United Arab Emirates has announced that the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, ADFD has given Rwanda a loan of $25 million [over 34.7 billion Frw] that will help expand the capacity of the Karenge water plant in the District of Rwamagana.

This loan agreement was signed in Abu Dhabi on December 11, 2024, where Rwanda was represented by Ambassador John Mirenge while the ADFD Fund was represented by its CEO, Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi.

Al Suwaidi said that this agreement shows their willingness to develop infrastructure aimed at improving the quality of life and development of the people in the partner countries.

He said, “It also shows the efforts we put in developing good relations with Rwanda, contributing to the development of institutions that play a major role in the development of the country.”

He confirmed that this project which is expanding the factory and water pipes at the Karenge water plant is an important step in bringing clean water to all parts of Rwanda.

The Ambassador of Rwanda to the United Arab States, John Mirenge announced that Rwanda’s cooperation with ADFD will help the country achieve its goal of providing clean water to all Rwandans.

He said, “The expansion of the Karenge water plant and water pipes is a major project that will bring the country to its goal of providing clean water to all our citizens and building a modern and sustainable water infrastructure that meets the needs of the people.”

Amb. Mirenge stressed that this project will change the lives of Rwandans through the work they will do and improve the water supply to different areas, and the number of people who need it.

“This step is in line with the broader vision of our country’s development and the goal of providing clean water to everyone,” he said.

The results of the 2022 census show that more than 82% of people use clean water, those in the city of Kigali are at the top, at the rate of 97% and in the West Province those who use clean water in their daily life are 75%.

81.1% of households in Eastern Province have access to clean water, while Rwamagana District leads others in having clean water users in this province, which is at 90.5%.

This project is one of the projects aimed at making the Capital of Rwanda, Kigali, have enough clean water. It includes the construction of a water plant with the capacity to process 36,000 cubic meters per day and the expansion of water pipes to important parts of the City of Kigali.

Statistics show that the City of Kigali has more than 488 thousand houses, major commercial activities and various hotels, and needs water equal to 145 thousand cubic meters per day.
