In the city of Kigali, passengers have started to pay the amount of the trip they have made in the pilot program, where a person who has not traveled at all pays the amount equal to the time he spent in the car.
This method was launched on Wednesday, December 04, 2024, after the announcement made by the National Agency for Controlling the Performance of Certain Public Service Institutions (RURA), and passengers believe that it is a great solution because they have the ability to pay a sum that is not equal to the entire trip.
This program started in two Kigali roads, Nyabugogo-Kubuga and Downtown-Kabuga, where passengers can pay according to the kilometers of the road they would travel.
This mileage-based payment system allows passengers to pay according to their journey, where 1 km is charged at 182 Frw, 10 km is charged at 388 Frw, and 20 km is charged at 730 Frw, while 25 km is charged at 885 Frw. RURA officials confirm that the pilot program is still being explained to passengers, drivers, and employees of the transportation companies.
Sam Murenzi, who oversees traffic at the Downtown Metro Station, says there are requirements for people to use the system properly.
He said, “A traveler must have his own card, and he is not allowed to lend it to others. In addition, he must remember to tap the card when he leaves so that the machine will return the money.”
RURA also pointed out that the price will change when the program is rolled out. Downtown-Remera (10 km) will cost 388 Frw, while Downtown-Rwandex (6 km) will cost 274 Frw, and Sonatube-Prince House (2 km) will cost 182 Frw.
Travelers believe that it will enable them to reach their desired destination without any loss. This program launched in the City of Kigali is a positive step in the development of car payment methods and increased cleanliness in order to provide better services and help the people to live well.
This approach will allow travelers to focus on the journey they have made while still minimizing waste and creating well-prepared journeys.
